P1-King Henry VI, Windsor

This badge probably commemorates the Lancastrian King Henry VIs brief return to power in 1470, prior to his death following defeat at the battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. Due to his violent death, Henry VI soon achieved popular sanctity despite condemnation during the reign of Edward IV. His cult was recognized by Richard III and rose to prominence as one of England’s most important pilgrimages following the Yorkist’s defeat at the battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Original found in London.

Late 15th century.
